An exotic animal is a term used to describe all animals not classified as large animals (cows, horses, pigs, etc.) or small animals (cats and dogs). By this definition, exotic animals include rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, lizards, snakes, turtles, and any other unusual companion. As you can imagine, it’s not uncommon to walk into a home today and find not only a typical cat or dog, but also one of these unique pets.
These smaller cage or tank-dwelling animals are growing in popularity due to their ability to thrive in smaller spaces. Historically, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and hamsters have served as “starter” pets for many young children, teaching responsibility and providing companionship.
